As an Indonesian and living abroad, tofu is one of the absolute ”must have” in my menu. My kids and my husband love tofu. When I have some spare time, I usually make tofu from scratch. But otherwise Asian stores all over the city are selling tofu. Even some local supermarkets are starting to sell tofu(it varies from the asian store’s tofu). But tofu itself(or also known as soja ”cheese”), doesn’t taste so much. Most of the times you will need to add up some spices to make it taste better. There are also different textures for different usage; we Indonesians are usually using the hard texture tofu, since we fry alot(and sometimes make
filling for tofu). Hard texture don’t break easily when you fry’em. For soups, there are softer texture that you can use(not recommend to fry as you will only get soggy mashed tofu).
Today I will give you a simple recipe for tofu. I bet you will love this, heck, your kids will love this!!
(ps: in the picture, I am making 2 sets of tofu but the recipe is for 1 set).
1 package tofu (500 grams), drain and pad dry
1 tbs salt
1 tsp white peppar
0,5 ts garlic powder (or 1 clove chop garlic)
0,5 tsp baking powder
1 egg yolk (get another half of the yolk to make it creamier) *for two sets I used 3 yolks.
Lots of cooking oil to fry
mash tofu (use potato masher or mortel or improvise with something 😀 just don’t mash it with your feet ha ha ha). when it is soft, add up yolk, salt and pepper, mix it well. Then pour baking powder and mix it again. using cooking gloves, form tofu into balls(approximately 1,5 tbs, but smaller if you wish to). Use non stick pot/pan and heat up the oil. Then Deep fry tofu until you get those yellowish brown color. *make sure that tofu are covered with oil, then you will be getting perfectly round and crispy surface.
Tips: The end result can be eaten just like that, or with sauce of your choice, or like me, I made beef broth and put tofu in it. So yummy! Happy trying and let me know if
you have some question.
